Resolute Forest Products awards community grant to the Sylacauga Community Playhouse

Resolute Forest Products has recognized employees of the Coosa Pines Mill at Childersburg for their safe work performance of more than 750,000 safe work hours. The safety milestone was achieved at the mill on December 14, 2018 following 462 safe work days.

Robert Dufresne, Vice President, Operations, presented a plaque commemorating the achievement to mill employees on Wednesday, January 16. In addition, the company has provided $10,000 to employees to be given to qualified charities of their choice.

Sylacauga Community Playhouse was selected to receive $2,500 of the $10,000 safety award to underwrite the school performances for the April production of Thomas W. Olson’s stage adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden. “Community partners like Resolute Forest Products make it possible for children in Talladega County and surrounding counties to experience live theatre, many for the first time, at an affordable cost”, says SCP Board Member Amy McDonald. “The spring productions are chosen specifically to be a resource to educators to meet their educational goals. The required reading list for the schools is considered when making the selection. We believe that students that struggle with reading and comprehension may be inspired when they see the characters come alive on stage,” said McDonald.

Dufresne added, “Reaching 750,000 safe work hours is a great achievement for the employees of the Coosa Pines Mill. I am proud to recognize this accomplishment and present Sylacauga Community Playhouse with a check in the amount of $2,500 on behalf of employees at the Coosa Pines Mill. Since 2017, the mill has contributed $25,000 to community programs and organizations thanks to their exemplary safety performance.”

Based on prior years, the Sylacauga Community Playhouse anticipates over 1500 students to come see The Secret Garden. Many of the cast are students at area schools. “It is always a lot of fun to see a fellow-student be on stage and inspires many to audition for future productions,” said McDonald.

There will be eight performances of The Secret Garden, including three school performances. Many of these students will be friends or relatives of employees of Resolute. Opening night for The Secret Garden will be April 4th and the production will end with a school performance on Thursday, April 11th. Public performances will be April 4th – April 7th. Advance tickets will go on sale February 1st and can be purchased for $10 in advance by visiting www.scplayhouse.com, Maxye Veazey Senior Center, and the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce. Tickets purchased at the door will be $12. Please contact Amy McDonald at (256) 369-3003 if you are a teacher or school administrator and would like your students to attend a school showing.

Resolute Board of Directors Safety Award program supports community and charitable organizations selected by facility employees who achieve 250,000 hours without a recordable injury. More than $2 million has been donated to local organizations in our operating communities since 2010.
