Dr. Suzanne Lacey, Talladega County Schools superintendent, reports that construction of the new stadium in Childersburg is progressing on schedule and without problems. And that means that it should be ready in time for the upcoming 2017 high school football season!
Bids for the project were opened last summer by the Talladega County Board of Education. Edison and Associates, Inc., of Cullman, is constructing the $7,519,600 facility, which will carry the same name as the facility it replaces, John Cox Stadium.
A Hall-of-Famer, Cox began the football program at Childersburg High School in 1947 and led it for 33 years before retiring following the 1979 season. His overall record as a football coach at Childersburg was 189 wins, 126 losses and 14 ties. The Stadium was named in his honor in 1976.
The new stadium is one of several projects that became possible after Childersburg voters approved a property tax increase of 2-percent to 5 mills in January 2016.
Funds from the tax increase are also allowing the Talladega County school system to upgrade the lunchroom at Watwood Elementary School, the gym at Childersburg Elementary School, and make improvements to the softball field.
